‘Tis the season for adorable baby animals! Each year, New York City’s zoos welcome several new additions to their menageries of education and conservation, and 2014 is no exception. From the Bronx Zoo’s bouncing baby gorillas to the Staten Island Zoo’s wee anteater, here are some of New York’s most adorable zoo babies — present (still babies right now) and past (think of them more as teenagers). Go and visit them IRL, or simply carry their pictures around in your wallet and look at them whenever you need some warm fuzzies.
Western lowland gorillas, Bronx Zoo
The first gorillas born at the Bronx Zoo since 2006, these little guys are a result of the Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program that aims to produce genetically viable offspring across a network of zoos. They were born in March and April of 2014 and can be seen doing their adorable baby thing right now in the Congo Gorilla Forest.
Tamandua, Staten Island Zoo
Ever wonder what a baby anteater looks like? It’s even cuter than you think. The first recorded tamandua zoo birth in the metropolitan region, baby MJ was born to mother DJ in January 2014 and has been busy getting big and strong so he can go on view in the zoo’s Tropical Rainforest wing very soon (hopefully late spring).
White-naped crane, Central Park Zoo
The white-naped crane is a majestic bird that starts out as an adorable fuzzy brown chick. See the recently hatched (April 11, 2014) cranelet chilling with its parents right now at the Central Park Zoo.
Quadruplet lion cubs, Bronx Zoo
Look out! This litter of three brothers and one sister might be less than a year old (born on Aug. 16 2013), but they are growing fast. They can be seen roaming the Bronx Zoo’s African Plains habitat.
Snow leopards, Central Park Zoo
These snow leopards’ natural habitat may be icy and cold, but that won’t stop them from melting your heart. Born in the summer of 2013, this brother-sister pair are currently raising hell in the Allison Maher Stern Snow Leopard Exhibit.
Pudu, Queens Zoo
The world’s tiniest species of deer is cute enough as an adult, but its babies are really something else. This pudu fawn was born at the Queens Zoo in spring of 2013. She’s no longer a baby, but she’s still a total doll.
White-cheeked gibbon, Bronx Zoo
White-cheeked gibbons are a critically endangered species, which is a shame because they’re totally rad. The Bronx Zoo made an important contribution to their numbers when this one was born in January of 2013 … the zoo’s first baby gibbon since 2000!
Geoffroy’s marmosets, Prospect Park Zoo
What’s better than a baby marmoset? How about twin baby marmosets? These lil’ fellas were born at the Prospect Park Zoo in November 2013 and, yes, they are checking you out.
Chinese big-headed turtle, Prospect Park Zoo
“Ohai! I’m a Chinese big-headed turtle hatched in winter of 2013 as part of WCS’s efforts to preserve critically endangered species and I want to hang out with you.”
Red pandas, Prospect Park Zoo
Not one, but two sets of red panda twins were born in New York in June of 2013. The ones you see here are currently on view at the Prospect Park Zoo’s Discovery Trail. They’re nearly full grown now, but we think red pandas are just darling at any age.
