What do a hippo calf in Indonesia, a zebra foal in Hungary, a rhino calf in France and a gorilla infant in California have in common? These baby animals — and many others — all recently made their public debut at their respective zoos. Some were born late last year, others are just a few days old now, all are adorable.
At the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia, a baby hippo was born on Jan. 2 to mom Agustina. Despite a birthday on day two of the year, the calf was not the first animal born there. That distinction goes to a Hog Bawean deer fawn born on Jan. 1. (Both are in the slideshow above.) Though the as-yet-unnamed hippo may be slightly younger, the fawn is no match for the hippo in terms of size; hippo calves weigh almost 100 pounds — at birth.

European Zoos enjoyed some New Year cheer, too, with several new additions. In Hungary, at the Budapest Zoo and Botanic Garden, zebra mare Romy and zebra stallion Zucchero welcomed a foal on Sunday, Jan. 4. Germany’s Zoo Wilhelma introduced a baby gorilla, born the day after Christmas 2014. And at the zoological park in Amneville, France, a white rhino named Shango, born mid-December, appeared in public for the first time.
Not to be outdone, zoos in the United States also shared in the celebrating, with the birth of an elephant in Oklahoma and a gorilla born at the San Diego Zoo. “On December 26, as we quietly started our morning routine ... we found a wonderful surprise: A highly endangered western lowland gorilla had been born!” zookeepers there wrote. “We had just entered the building at 6:15 a.m. when we discovered 34-year-old gorilla Jessica cradling a newborn who looked to be less than an hour old. She was gingerly cleaning her baby boy and clutching him close to her chest.” The boy is Jessica’s sixth baby.
Vulnerable to Attack
Whenever I take pictures of baby wild animals, I can't help feeling some apprehension, wondering what the future holds and whether they will survive to adulthood.
All young animals born in the wild, even elephant calves, are vulnerable to attack by predators.
Baby hippos can be taken by crocodiles, while young antelope are particularly vulnerable to a wide array of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.
Even Lion Cubs Face Danger
Although lion cubs are usually safe from attack by other cats or hyenas when they're part of a pride and close to other pride members, even they are not guaranteed a carefree transition to adulthood.
In most lion prides there are one or more dominant males who rule the roost for a few years, lording it over the lionesses and tolerating their own offspring.
Younger, Stronger Males
But inevitably they will be displaced by younger, stronger males looking for females to mate with.
These new dominant males instinctively want to propagate, so they will search out and kill any cubs in the pride to ensure the females come back quickly into breeding condition.
Although this sounds terrible, it's part of the life cycle in the wild, and just as some baby animals will not survive, many others will grow from cute miniatures of their parents into strong, self-sufficient adults.
Photo Tip Young animals move quickly, so have your camera ready and shoot first, then look for unusual angles, close-ups, or juxtaposing young and old, big and small.
